The Tai On Café”
For those who never been to Tai On Café before, You can still easily recognize the café with its sharp and clear sign. You can feel the heritage and the vintage “Kong” style of the café by looking its outside decorations. Sadly we forgot to take a close-up look for the café, but we can still giving you guys a description. Through the glass, you can peek the inside of the cafe. On the left hand side, you can see few metal trays which containing the freshly made pineapple bun and egg tarts! On the door, you can see "Welcome" in red and traditional chinese font!

Without further ado, let's get into the cafe! Surprisingly, the door is quite heavy and we could hardly open it! Oh well, maybe we were just too hungry. Once we get inside, we are surround by the chatter of the waiters and the diners. Clearly they knew each other for quite long, the sense neighborhood are really strong. It just like a habit to take same seat and order the same food.

The waiter quickly allocated us to the booth seat. The major feature is the open-style kitchen, crews were busying inside, making food and drinks. For the inside decorations, it doesn't try to replicate some old "chachaanteng" style, eventually they were already here few decades ago and doesn't change a bit! including the wood booth seats which are tight for adults to fit in.

The menu was placed underneath the table, classic kong style!

Tai On cafe didn't offer much choices on food but they still in some traditional chachaanteng cusine. Most importantly, the price is quite reasonable for University students like us. We ordered two set lunch. One set was soup noodles with barbecue style pork, pan-fried egg and ham, also a toast with butter and Iced milk tea. Another set was soup noodles with luncheon pork, scrambled egg, pan-fried ham, hot milk tea and butter toast.
Thumbs Up!!
I would say the butter toast is nicely done, although I prefer a more crispy one, the amount of butter is on point. If you want a better taste, just follow this suggestion but our hunter, PK Fung! Evenly spread some white sugar on two slice of toast, the butter and the sugar is a good combo and trust me, it never fail you.
And for the ham, well, it wasn't anything special, but still nicely fried. Nothing more, nothing less. But the scrambled egg was nicely done, the chef didn't overcook it, it tasted so good. My friend ordered the pan-fried egg and it didn't disappoint us too. The egg white was crispy and the egg yolk is still raw.
For the main dish, Soup instant noodles. Comparatively, I prefer the pan-fried luncheon pork. It was nicely fried and taste fantastic. For barbecue style pork, it was not anything impressive. Overall, instant noodles wasn't anything special at all, you can cook it at home by yourself, but you just can't make the taste of cha chaan teng. Admit it, the easy food always require the hardest effort to make it taste good.
The whole meal costs around HKD $30, and it is a fair deal because we were so full. Despite it price, sometimes you don't really eat great food from some old Cha chaan teng, it's the feel they gives you. It can be a place for neighbour to meet up, or a place you take a rest and enjoy your afternoon. Those are the true value of traditional Cha chaan teng and the reason why they can survive til these days.
